Thankful For You

Thankful For You - Cindy Spencer Pape When hometown hero, Sig comes home scarred and battered from serving his country, the last thing he expects is to become a sudden local celebrity. Suffering from PTSD, still hurting from his wounds, he’d like nothing better than to settle down far from the limelight, preferably with the new pet shop owner in town. Elsie is haunted by her own demons, sporting sporting scars of her own, albeit emotional ones instead of physical ones like Sig. Sig fascinates her, but she just isn’t ready for a relationship. These two could help each other heal but only if they allowed themselves to.

I have to admit that when reading about Sig, his injuries and everything he still found time to do to help others, I found Elsie’s attitude a bit of an annoyance. How to compare your loss with someone who bears physical scars? You can’t. That is not to minimize her loss and what she went through. However, I believe she overlooked what Sig had gone through and how strong he came out in the end and wallowed in her own misery, using it to shield herself from ever getting hurt again.

Overall though, I found this to be quite an enjoyable read. It was well written, Sig was absolutely beautiful inside and out, and having grown up in a small town myself, I loved the dynamics of the other secondary characters and their interactions. I would definitely recommend this. It makes a great summer beach read.
